Ask a Biologist:
I am very interested in pursuing a career as a fossil preparator and reconstructive model artist, and being a senior in high school, am wondering what path of education I should take to get there. Can anyone give me information on the career, or simply the art of creating scientific, three-dimensional models from fossils?
Thanks!
Jill

Hi Jill,
You may find some interesting information on the Geological Curators' Group website
http://geocurator.org/

The Natural History Museum has a specialist palaeo-conservation unit but many of the people working there had more general backgrounds in chemistry and conservation or had been self-employed preparators before.

Most models are developed by artists in collaboration with palaeontologists.

Best,
