Hi, I was wondering if animals (other than humans of course) menstruate. Is it true that mammals (other than humans) reabsorb the uterine lining if not used for pregnancy while humans expel it from their bodies?

I did try to look up that information but I hardly found any solid answers.

Thank you.

Hi Lydia,
Here is a pretty good article on the subject: http://freethoughtblogs.com/pharyngula/ … nstruate/. The short answer is humans and most other primates as well as a few bat species and elephant shrews menstruate while most other mammals do not. It looks like most mammals that don't menstruate do not build up the uterine lining in the first place unless an embryo implants.
